The applications of the homotopy perturbation method are extended from the single equation to the coupled system to study a (2+1)-dimensional rotating shallow water system. By constructing special initial values, we obtain a kind of interesting approximate solution: numerical pulsrodons, which are used to describe a combined motion of steady rotation and periodic pulsation. The efficiency of the method is verified by analyzing the errors between the numerical pulsrodons and the exact ones derived by Rogers and An, which shows that good results are achieved.
