Morphology and microstructure control of Gd2O2S were studied via SO2/SO42 − sulfuration. Anisotropic growth of Gd2O2S precursors (nano-rods) were achieved from Gd2O3 nano-spheres. Formation mechanism of nano-rods and tremelliform Gd2O2S powders were clearly illustrated.
