ZrB2-HfB2 solid solutions as electrode materials for hydrogen reaction in acidic and basic solutions

Solid solutions of transition metal borides HfB2-ZrB2 show better electrocatalytic behavior for hydrogen evolution reaction. Hf0.5Zr0.5B2 performed best with Tafel slope of 120 mV/decade and an overpotential of 420 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M NaOH. Hf0.8Zr0.2 B2 had good Tafel slopes of 260 and 150 mV/decade in 1 M NaOH and 1 M H2SO4, respectively. Hf0.8Zr0.2 B2 had overpotentials at 10 mA/cm2 of 610 and 550 mV in 1 M NaOH and 1 M H2SO4, respectively.
