Effluent losses during prolonged continuous renal replacement therapy in the intensive care unit lead to major deficiencies of copper and selenium. Acute copper deficiency during continuous renal replacement therapy is a new problem. The effects of copper deficiency on cardiac rhythm can be life threatening. Copper serum values should be monitored in all critically ill patients requiring prolonged continuous renal replacement therapy.
