The effect of environmental hypercapnia and size on nitrite toxicity in the striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)

Hypercapnia protects against nitrite uptake during initial stages of respiratory acidosis.

After pH compensation nitrite uptake is greatly enhanced to above normocapnic uptake rates.

We present evidence of a temporal shift from H+/Na+ to Cl/HCO3 exchange during pH regulation.

Small fish are better at oxidizing nitrite into nitrate, probably due to higher hematocrit.
