The infrared spectra of the refractive index, n, and of the absorption index, k, of polytetrafluoroethylene were determined ellipsometrically. It was confirmed that the sample is thick enough to apply a direct evaluation at every spectral data point and does not show measurable anisotropy. A set of oscillators was specified to reproduce the experimental spectra. Two of the bands between 1600 and 500 cm−1 are intense enough to cause the refractive index to fall below unity. The related optical features and remaining deviations are discussed.
