Local structure and dynamics of high temperature SrO–Al2O3 liquids studied by 27Al NMR and Sr K-edge XAS spectroscopy

In situ spectroscopic studies of liquid oxides at temperatures greater than 2000 °C remain challenging experiments but provide a unique opportunity to better understand their physical properties. Aerodynamic levitation, combined with laser heating, has been conducted with NMR or XAS spectroscopy to obtain the characterisation of local structure and dynamics of very high temperature liquids of the SrO–Al2O3 binary system. We present and discuss results obtained using time resolved 27Al NMR in the range 1800–2300 °C for seven different compositions and the first results obtained by Sr K-edge XAS for the SrO–Al2O3 binary system.
