We studied the ash reduction from several biomass types by water and acid washing.

The extent of ash reduction depended highly on the type of the biomass feedstock.

Acid washing with HNO3 was the most effective for ash removal.

Pyrolysis of all demineralized samples led to substantially increased bio-oil yield.

GCxGC-ToFMS analysis revealed significant changes in the bio-oil composition.
