Water promotes sulfate formation at RH in the range of 6%–70%, while exceeded water inhibits sulfate formation at RH higher than 80%. Soot surface composition plays important roles in SO2 uptake and sulfate formation. Soot with a suitable amount of aromatic CH and CO groups exhibits the highest reactivity at 54% RH.
