Gastroscopes had higher ATP levels than colonoscopes. Borescope examinations of endoscope lumens revealed defects requiring repair. Microbial growth was found on approximately half of patient-ready endoscopes. Internal damage and residual fluid may foster contamination and biofilm formation.
