Energy transfer and upconversion of Sm3+ ions in YAlO3

YAP:Sm3+ crystals have been grown by the micro-pulling down method. Sm3+ concentration influences luminescence properties. Inokuti-Hirayama model is suitable for estimating the concentration quenching. The interaction between Sm3+ ions was found to be dipole–dipole nature. Orange up-converted luminescence observed in Sm3+ doped YAP under IR excitation is due to energy transfer.
