An ultrathin polymer film incorporating an amphiphilic ruthenium (II) polypyridine complex with long chain tails was prepared on a water surface by a casting-on-water method, and X-ray absorption spectra were measured by the total electron yield method. Molar ratios between ruthenium head group and perchlorate ions at the solvent–water interface were found far from stoichiometric value (1:2) when the thin film was formed on fresh water.
