Unsaturated quartz sand and glass beads investigated via the Hopkinson bar. Stress–strain behavior of unsaturated granular media is strain rate dependent. Particle shape may influence the unsaturated stress–strain response. Extent of grain crushing decreases linearly with increasing saturation. Proportion of load sustained by solid and liquid phases dictate specimen response.
