Hydraulic fractures propagate perpendicular to σ3 orientation. Theoretical hydraulic fracture orientations do not always improve rock caveability. Stress shadow role in hydraulic fracture reorientation is investigated with modelling. Deviatoric stresses affect hydraulic fracture reorientation. Rock mass heterogeneity has significant impact on hydraulic fracture propagation.
