Hydraulic Head Measurements in Two-phase Hydrogeological Conditions

The Hula Valley, located in the northern Jordan Valley, Israel, is a deep depression characterized by low permeability sediments. Gas boreholes discharge a mixture of gas and groundwater, allowing the only detailed hydrological exploration of the Hula Valley's deep groundwater system. The existence of two phases – highly pressurized gas and water in the boreholes poses technical obstacles in defining the hydraulic heads in the sub-aquifer units from these boreholes. A novel methodology is proposed of simultaneously measuring the pressure at the bottom of the borehole next to the aquifer and at the top of the borehole to gain both an accurate evaluation of the density of the water mixed with gas bubbles and the representative local hydraulic head of the water-bearing formation.
