Sulfuric acid hydrolysate of Valoniopsis pachynema was a potential substrate for photobiological hydrogen production.

Chlorella vulgaris MSU-AGM 14 showed sustained photobiological hydrogen production (0.0039 gh−1 L−1) on acid hydrolysate.

Central composite design variables for optimum production were substrate-3.25 g L−1, temperature - 32 °C, 3.9% CO2 and pH-7.66
