Oxidative and non-oxidative hydrothermal processes were studied and compared. At ⩽220 °C, H2O2 in the oxidative process was up to 50 times of non-oxidative. At ⩾240 °C, 3–5.5 times more H2O2 was measured in the non-oxidative process. Non-oxidative process has significant role in solid degradation and solubilisation. Less acetic acid produced in the non-oxidative process compared to the oxidative.
