Seven out of nine patients (78 % ) with hypergammaglobulinemic purpura of Waldenström (HGP) were found to have antibodies to Ro/SSA. In all of the seven patients, associated diseases were recognized in 2-15 years. Five had primary Sjögren's syndrome, one had rheumatoid arthritis, and one had systemic lupus erythematosus with Sjögren's syndrome and thyroiditis. Our study suggests that screening for antibodies to Ro/SSA, especially to the 52kd component of Ro/SSA, is important in the diagnosis of patients with HGP, and might be helpful in predicting prognosis.
