Making clinical impressions of preeruptive herpes zoster of the head are challenging. Clinical pain characteristics of acute herpes zoster of the head were analyzed. The pain experienced was typically stabbing, unilateral, moderate to severe, and often awakens patients. Such pain onset of less than one week coincides with incoming herpes zoster of the head.
