The toxicity of highway road dust was evaluated. Sediment toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) found organic contaminants were the major toxicants. The contribution of dissolved nicotine to the toxicity was highest among the individual chemicals measured. Dissolved nicotine alone contributed little to the observed toxicity.
