The Petroleum Equalization Fund (PEF) remains an implicit part of the petroleum price subsidy in Nigeria since 1975
The rentier nature of the Nigerian state logged the PEF into politics of public revenue sharing in the country.
The operations of the Fund are characterized by shortages of petroelum products, corruption and management deficiencies.
Against its principles, the existence of the PEF provided room for arbitrage behavior and abuse of the petroleum subsidy regime.
This paper thus recommends for the abolition of PEF, considering the defeated goal of achieving uniformity in petroleum prices in the country.
