We simultaneously analyze 12-month-olds looking and deferred imitation behavior.

We vary action functionality (arbitrary vs. functional) in a deferred imitation task.

Infants’ looking time to arbitrary vs. functional does not significantly differ.

No deferred imitation for arbitrary actions was found.

Functional actions are, however, imitated significantly more than arbitrary actions.
