Relative importance of density dependence and topography on tree mortality in a subtropical mountain forest

Tree mortality is nonrandom with an aggregated spatial pattern at 0–30 m scales. Tree mortality mainly driven by competition and negative density dependence. Topographic factors showed limited correlations with tree mortality. Tree size was an important predictor of tree mortality at the community level.
