Agonists of alpha-2 receptor protect brain cells from death (primarily astrocytes). After 24 h of incubation with the neuroprotectors the time until a global [Ca2+]i rise during OGD increased significantly. Agonists of the α-2 receptors, PI3- kinase activators, antioxidants and IL-10 protected cells from death during OGD.
