Prostate cancer PC3 cells overexpress iNOS/NO after PDT-like photodynamic targeting. NO from targeted cells diffuses to non-targeted bystander cells. Bystanders exhibit faster NO-dependent growth and migration than controls. Bystander responses reflect a feed-forward NO field effect. This is the first reported example of bystander NO signaling in the context of PDT.
