From neighbors to school friends? How adolescents’ place of residence relates to same-ethnic school friendships

文摘

We examine friendships of 3345 students in 158 German and Dutch school classes.

Students show ethnic homophily in their friendship choices.

Students tend to befriend classmates living nearby or nearby friends (propinquity).

Propinquity hardly contributes to ethnic homogeneity in friendships.

More outgroup exposure in the neighborhood does not weaken ethnic homophily.
