In avoidant states, DID patients are not shut off from the realization of past trauma. Regardless of identity state, DID patients formulate more avoidant future goals compared to patients with PTSD. Trauma-related self-defining memories are associated with trauma-related future goals. Therapeutic interventions may address the patient's self-perception as trauma victim. The formulation of future approach goals may aid recovery in these patients.
