A gendered perspective is used to examine variations in contraception across Europe.

We approach gender inequality as a multilayered concept at three levels of analysis.

Women’s higher socioeconomic status is related to more effective contraceptive use.

Women with a higher status are more likely to use female rather than male methods.

Country-level gender equality associates with the East-West gap in method use.
