Use of some advanced biofuels for overcoming smoke/NOx trade-off in a light-duty DI diesel engine

Three advanced biofuels iso-butanol, n-pentanol and DMC were used as blends with diesel.

Combustion-phasing and charge-dilution was controlled by EGR and injection timing modification.

All blends presented enhanced premixed combustion with high peak pressures and peak HRR.

Simultaneous reduction of NOx/smoke was realized with all blends at moderate EGR & late injection.

HC and CO emissions increased.
