Nitric oxide induces cellular senescence similar to reactive oxygen species (ROS). DNA damage caused though NO exposure leads to growth arrest and aging. Induction or overexpression of iNOS is sufficient to drive aging. Intrinsic generated or externally provided NO have the same phenotype. Viability of aged cells is regulated by ROS and ATM kinase.
