People don’t morally judge those who cause bad outcomes beyond their control, but why?

We show that control separately influences perceptions of intention and causation.

Agents with control over accidents are punished more, in spite of their good intent.

This effect is specific to punishment; judgments of character show opposite pattern.

These results clarify how, when and why control influences moral judgment.
