Focus on artefacts in structuring communicative events in (institutional) interaction. Artefacts enhance intersubjectivity when deployed for mutual focus and participation. Verbal language can be sparse and deictic while gaze and pointing to an artefact does referential work. Speech can be paced to match the deployment of an artefact. Artefacts are a resource for signalling interactional (in)accessibility, inviting or suspending interaction.
