Multivariate analysis (MVA) is suitable to assess changes in soil ionic composition. We used MVA to assess salinity in 42 soils in an irrigated area over a 24 year period. Salinity depended on landscape position and varied with time due to irrigation. Temporal changes depended on the years considered, landform and crop characteristics. MVA is useful in detecting singular trends of groups of observations or single cases.
