We describe the principle of compact Compton sources (CCS). We highlight the crucial parameters needed to produce high flux and high brightness. We give an overview of the main high flux CCS projects in the world in near future and in next future. We quantify the potential of application of near future X-ray Compton source projects in the medical imaging and therapy fields.
