Salt or ice diapirism origin for the honeycomb terrain in Hellas basin, Mars?: Implications for the early martian climate

文摘
Hellas honeycomb terrain recently interpreted to form by salt or ice diapirism. We explore the parameter space in which salt/ice diapirism is predicted to occur. Results: Diapirism requires 0.1–1 km ice, 0.6–3.1 km gypsum or kieserite, or 1.0–3.1 km halite thickness. On basis of the large salt thicknesses required, ice diapirism is more likely. Ice could be remnant of frozen ocean (warm Mars) or glacial flow into Hellas (cold climate).
