Ring-width based dating may be detrimentally influenced by site ecological effects. Blue intensity (BI), measured from conifer latewood, is less affected by such effects. BI increases the likelihood of attaining a correct crossdate of historical samples. Ring-width and BI are concurrently measured and are inexpensive to produce. BI has great potential for dendroarchaeological dating and provenancing.
