A mathematical analysis was employed to quantify the competing removal path (flotation and sedimentation) for the emulsified oil removal in the batch EC reactor for unraveling the dominant separation mechanisms. A quantitative comparison on between current density and mixing by magnetic stirrer first was conducted to elucidate the effects of these two factors on the demulsification process. Water qualities as concentration and type of surfactant in the emulsion were discussed for practical applications of EC technique.
