An experiment simulating the hydraulic fracturing at the gravity dam heel was presented. Based on experimental results, a finite element model was optimized. The safety of high dams (H > 200 m) were analyzed in considering hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing should be considered when designing high gravity dams (H > 200 m).
