The literature review on this subject showed that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an understudied, underdiagnosed, and undertreated risk factor in the transient ischemic attack/stroke population.
Adding the OSA screening tool, the STOP-Bang Questionnaire, to the hospital inpatient stroke assessment would enhance the level of stroke risk factor management with early screening identification and, if indicated, recommendation for evaluation and treatment.
Not only is this a potential to identify those at risk for OSA but also an opportunity to improve stroke risk factor management in the future for those affected.
