Pathways of external nutrient loading to 656 coastal water bodies were compared. In a typical water body, > 99% of the nutrients came from adjacent marine water bodies. However, of the 656 water bodies, 45 received > 25% of nutrients from their catchments. Land-based loadings peaked in April, which may affect spring blooms.
