The suitability of clay as an algae (greenwater) substitute for larviculture varies temporally. In the first week after first-feeding, algae led to better growth and survival than clay, with benefits beyond turbidity. In the second week after first-feeding, clay was less expensive than algae and led to better growth. Comparisons between clay and algae should consider temporal aspects. If clay is used at the correct time, costs can be lowered and production increased.
