Media coverage of risks of hypnotics created little alarm in focus groups. Focus group members appeared to respond in line with existing views of hypnotics. Strong evidence of resistance to media coverage amongst some people. Need for caution regarding media's power to legitimate de-pharmaceuticalisation.
