Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is frequently caused by vascular compression of the facial nerve.
Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBDE) may cause crowding of the posterior fossa space.
We conducted a case-control study to investigate the prevalence of VBDE in HFS.
The prevalence of VBDE was higher in HFS than in controls, with an odds ratio of 5.82.
VBDE-positive patients had higher mean age and greater frequency of hypertension than VBDE-negative counterparts.
