Photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO:Eu nanoparticles was dependent of Eu3+ doping amount and solvents (water, ethanol, methanol) used in synthesis. Surface OH groups, used as hole traps, were most prominent in samples synthesized in methanol solvent. Influence of surface OH groups and Eu3+ ions was studied in photocatalytic degradation of cationic methylene blue and anionic methyl orange. The synergy effect of both electron (Eu3+ ions) and hole (surface OH groups) traps improved photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO:Eu nanoparticles. Both hole and hydroxyl radicals formation were important in degradation of methylene blue, while for methyl orange the formation of holes was the most important factor.
