We have de
signed and carried out
simulation
studie
s of a two-layer Shower Maximum Detector diagonally off-
set (SMD-do
s) optimized for the
separation of π
0 shower
s from γ
shower
s in the 30-150 GeV energy range. For 90 % γ acceptance the SMD-do
s yield
s π
0 rejection efficiencie
s of 92 &plu
smn; 4 % , 87 &plu
smn; 4 % and 32 &plu
smn; 2 % , re
spectively, for 30, 50 and 150 GeV incident energie
s. We find that the two-layer SMD-do
s i
s superior to a conventional geometry two-layer Shower Maximum Detector (SMD), of equal granularity, by an average factor of
s/glyph
s/BQ1.GIF>1.5 over the 50-150 GeV energy range.
