We examine the inequality-pollution relationship using Japanese city-level data. We show that inequality negatively affects air quality in the 1990s. The effect of inequality is larger in residential areas than in industrial areas. Evidence for a causal effect of inequality on pollution is provided. Equal communities can pressure firms into accepting voluntary agreements.
