We use thermo-mechanical models to investigate continent–continent collision zones. Collision may result in double vergent orogens or continental subduction. Crustal mechanics determine this transition. Strong rheological coupling of upper and lower crust forms double vergent orogens. Low rheological coupling of upper and lower crust results in continental subduction.
