Skills and drills are a form of simulation training that re-create clinical scenarios for participants to apply and integrate clinical skills, teamwork and critical thinking. Team-based training for obstetric emergencies has been repeatedly recommended by the Confidential Enquiry reports into Maternal Deaths and endorsed by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). Furthermore, until recently, the NHS Litigation Authority provided financial incentives in the form of reduced insurance premiums to NHS maternity units in England that fulfilled their requirements for training. Effective training is cost effective, but it is not cheap. Effective training requires planning and organization as well as financial and managerial support. Not all training is clinically effective; costs should be considered as well as outcomes.
