Clostridium difficile, also known as C. difficile, is currently classified as one of the largest threats to patient safety and quality outcomes in health care today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is estimated that C. difficile infections cause approximately 14,000 deaths per year and over 250,000 hospitalizations annually. 1 Conservative estimates conclude that hospital-acquired C. difficile infections cost $10,212 per patient case, from the initial exposure to the infection presenting with active symptoms. 2 Although numerous studies have been conducted to examine the cumulative cost of hospital-acquired C. difficile infections, they all suggest that the cost associated with these infections is paramount due to the extended hospital stay that follows post-exposure. 3 and 4 A study conducted by Quimbo et al.5 concluded that patients who present with active symptoms have an extended length of stay per hospitalization ranging from 3 to 18 days. The incremental cost associated with the increased length of stay due to C. difficile ranges from $11,179 to $115,632 (USD) per patient hospitalization.
