The benefits of coordinating reserve markets among market zones are studied. Models are developed to quantify the sizing, allocation and activation of reserves. A case study of the 2013 Central Western European electricity system is discussed. Reserve market coordination leads to reductions in operational system costs. Neglecting network constraints can lead to suboptimal reserve market outcomes.
